The reverse is engraved with foliate flourishes, and the hinged lid opens to reveal the maker's mark "SHREVE & CO 14K." Founded in 1852 by George C. Shreve and renamed Shreve & Co. in 1894, the firm became San Francisco's premier jeweler of the Gold Rush and Gilded Age eras.
